Smoke Signal is free to download and use. The app creates one weekly reminder alert against all your smoke & carbon monoxide alarms on a day and time that is convenient for you to carry out a quick testing routine. The alert has two voice announcements to make it distinctive over other audible alerts on your mobile device. One weekly alert to tell you it is time to carry out your test routine and another alert tells you to replace the batteries in these alarms every 6 months. Simple to use, you can set up multiple household alarms against one convenient alert in minutes.

Why we built this app

Digitalquill Ltd works with commercial organisations, designing and providing a variety of inspection monitoring solutions, including Fire Door Inspection Monitoring. It is through this work with clients that we uncovered how relaxed many are about smoke & carbon monoxide testing in their homes. Further investigation resulted in this being a wider spread issue. Many people believing that having a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm was enough. When we ask people how often they test them, or when they last tested them, we are greeted with blank looks or a lot of umming and ahhing. Having smoke & carbon monoxide alarms in your home is a positive step towards you and your family’s safety but regular testing of them is the sure fire way to know they’re operational.

Most people check their Lottery tickets on a weekly basis, so why not form a strong habitual routine around testing smoke & carbon monoxide alarms? It makes sense.
